Fire Ignited by Lava Burns 3,600 Acres
A wildfire ignited by lava flowing from Kilauea Volcano has spread across more than 2,000 acres since Friday and has burned a total of 3,600 acres since last month, officials said.
Over the weekend, three hotshot firefighting crews from the mainland arrived to help battle the fire. A fourth hotshot crew was expected Monday.
Helicopters dropped buckets of water and foam on the fire over the weekend as firefighters crews attempted to prevent its spread across native forests.
Kilauea has been erupting since Jan. 3, 1983.
