Graduating Celebrities Are Role Models

Re “Spielberg Role as Student a Wrap,” June 1: It was with a great sense of pride that I read the story on Steven Spielberg’s graduation and the completion of his degree. Too many times the stories associated with celebrities are of a negative nature.

In addition to Spielberg, Shaquille O’Neal and Emmitt Smith (and others) have returned to school to complete their education. These are the true role models for our youth. These men have reached the summit in their respective careers, but the reason that they are role models is their sense of commitment. O’Neal and Smith made promises to their families that they would return to school and complete their degrees. Spielberg’s reference to his parents was very touching to me.

After almost 20 years away from school, I will be earning my degree this fall. There are many reasons that I went back (career, income, self-fulfillment), but the main reason is for my family. To honor my parents and the sacrifices that they made for their children, and for my children--to be a role model for them. Thank you, Mr. Spielberg, for being a role model to me.

Spielberg said he wanted to get his bachelor’s degree to thank his parents and show his children the importance of a college education. But returning to Cal State Long Beach to get his degree is a monumental message for all young people. Education is so much more than a means to a good job.

Having learned that Spielberg has received his bachelor’s degree, I am wondering how he did it. Was he required to complete Algebra 1 and 2 and Statistics 110? If there is a way for senior citizens to return to college and receive a B.A. without this unneeded math it would be wonderful to learn the secret. Many of us are not math-oriented but would like the wonderful experience of learning in a classroom and earning a B.A. Math is the stumbling block to the fulfillment of a long-held dream.

I hope Spielberg understands that, as a film school graduate, he will be entering a seriously overcrowded job market.
