To Spur Blooms, Cut Back Old Ones

Share

Cut back delphiniums to get a strong second bloom in late summer. Leave only a few leaves at the bottom of each spike. Deadhead roses and other flowers as they fade to keep blooms coming.

Edibles to plant now include snap and lima beans, beets, carrots, chayotes, corn, cucumbers, endives, leaf lettuce, melons, New Zealand spinach, onions, summer and winter squash, sunflowers, Swiss chard, tomatoes and watermelons.

If you want a pumpkin for Halloween, plant one before the 15th.
