Vets, Villagers Fight ‘Omaha Beach’ Mussels
U.S. World War II veterans and Normandy villagers have joined forces again--this time against a bivalve mollusk best cooked in wine and served with fries.
Two fishermen in the Omaha Beach area want to create a commercial mussel bed on the D-day landing beach and plan to use “Omaha Beach” as a brand name.
A Web site set up by a World War II history buff has received about 900 protest messages, said Jean Marie Oxeant, mayor of nearby Vierville-sur-Mer.
“This is no better than tomb-raiding,” U.S. veteran Brian Jacobs wrote.
