Card Full at Belmont

Share

There is plenty more to be interested in at Belmont Park than merely War Emblem’s quest to become a Triple Crown winner.

The exceptional 12-race card includes four other graded stakes, two pick fours, one of which has a guaranteed $500,000 pool, and a pick six with $1 million guaranteed.

Players looking for a single in either pick four--the first is on races 8-11 and the second is on 9-12--or the pick six could do worse than settle on Beat Hollow.

A 5-year-old Sadler’s Wells horse owned and bred by Juddmonte Farms and trained by Bobby Frankel, Beat Hollow is the one to beat in the $400,000 Manhattan Handicap.

The ninth race on the card, the Manhattan is a Grade I at 1 1/4 miles on the turf. A winner of three of four in England and France in 1999 and 2000, Beat Hollow has won two of three since coming to the U.S.

Jockey Alex Solis, who does not have a mount in the Belmont Stakes, is in to ride Beat Hollow.

Besides the Belmont Stakes and the Manhattan, the other races in the pick six are the $250,000 True North Breeders’ Cup Handicap at six furlongs, the $200,000 Just A Game Breeders’ Cup Handicap at one mile on the turf, the $200,000 Riva Ridge Breeders’ Cup at seven furlongs and a $49,000 allowance race at seven furlongs on the turf.

Race of the day: The ninth at Hollywood Park is a wide-open grass race. It’s refreshing to see something other than maiden claimers in the final race of the day.

Who’s hot: A certain pick-six player or players. There was one winning ticket Thursday at Hollywood Park, worth $415,482.80.

Who’s not: Hunan. The 6-year-old, who will make his U.S. debut in today’s fifth at Hollywood Park, has not been 1-2-3 in his last 15 races.

Exotically speaking: A pick three singling Megahertz in the seventh, using Wyrick and Wheater in the eighth and all in the ninth.

Winners (through Thursday): Previous day/meet total: 1/84. Money: Previous day/meet total $3.40/$472.40. Total money bet: $566.
