Time to Stick With Gummy Delight

Share

Believe it or not, somebody will win the first race today.

One of three thoroughbred races on the card, the 4 1/2-furlong race for $2,500 maidens attracted nine fillies and mares ranging in age from 3-7.

Between them, the one Arizona bred and eight California breds have combined for zero victories in 83 starts.

Only five of the nine have managed to finish second or third and the leader in that category is Two Unpredictable. A 7-year-old, she has been second three times and third on nine other occasions. This will be her 48th start.

Gummy Delight, a 5-year-old daughter of Ventriloquist, may be the one to beat. A seven-time loser, she will be making her first start at this level after failing for $32,000 and $25,000 at Santa Anita and five times at the $5,000 plateau at Los Alamitos.

Owned by Rosario Alcala and trained by Jack Bentley Jr., Gummy Delight will be ridden by Joel Cruz and break from the two hole. The drawback with her is a lack of early speed, but the class drop may make all the difference.

The picks: 1. Gummy Delight. 2. Jjackson Champus. 3. Shescape. 4. Hubris. 5. Ageless. 6. Picante Paranoide. 7. Amender. 8. Valerio. 9. Kims Cat.

Four! Use Gummy Delight and Lovely Gay Shook in the first, single Jjackson Champus in the second, use Shescape, Kelli Louise, Prompt Settlement and Chill’s Rose in the third and Hubris, Pals Eyes and The Cash Broker in the fourth.

Shots in the dark: Charodeey adds Lasix in the fifth in his second start for trainer Connie Hall after having trouble in his bow on May 16. Silverio Time goes from an outside post to the rail in the sixth.

Post time: 5:30 p.m.
