Arnold Schwarzenegger: Qualified Candidate?

Share

Anyone who spends close to $12 million for a home to live in while his other four are being remodeled is too out of touch to be governor of California (“Run, Arnold, Run,” by Mark Z. Barabak, May 12). If Arnold Schwarzenegger really wants to make a difference in the lives of children, he should donate the proceeds from his next film to the after-school programs he touts. He may not get my vote, but at least he would get my attention.

I have a PhD in American history from UC Berkeley. In the past four decades I have taught at four universities and one of my books won a national prize. But I would never pretend to be qualified for high public office. That an actor who is known almost exclusively as an action hero in motion pictures filled with death and mayhem is being considered for the governorship of the the nation’s largest state is a commentary on the gullibility of the voters and the Republican Party’s cynical willingness to exploit their ignorance.
