Glavine Wins 11th for Braves

Tom Glavine and the Atlanta Braves got something different at the Metrodome--a victory.

Glavine became the second 11-game winner in the majors Tuesday night, giving up two hits over seven scoreless innings to lead the Braves past the Minnesota Twins, 11-0.

“Glavine was Glavine,” Atlanta Manager Bobby Cox said. “To pitch a two-hit shutout in this park is saying something.”

Andruw Jones, Vinny Castilla and Matt Franco hit consecutive home runs in a seven-run fifth inning and Keith Lockhart and Javy Lopez also homered for the Braves, who have won 13 of 16 games.

“Yeah, we finally won a game in this darn place,” Glavine said.

He and John Smoltz are the only holdovers from Atlanta’s 1991 team, which lost a thrilling seven-game World Series to the Twins that year.

A game in June can’t make up for an October disappointment, but Glavine was pleased with his performance.

“Those are nice memories for me,” Glavine said. “That was a fun series to be a part of, but with me and Smoltz being the only two guys left from that team, it’s lost some of its luster.”

Minnesota won all four of its home games in the ’91 series and then defeated the Braves, 6-5, in 15 innings Monday night--the first regular season meeting between the teams.

But Glavine (11-2), having one of the best seasons of his 16-year career, gave Atlanta its first-ever victory in Minneapolis. He struck out two, walked one, won his sixth consecutive start and trails Arizona’s Curt Schilling, who leads the majors with 12 wins.

Glavine’s earned-run average on the road is an astounding 0.71.
