Whenever the conversation turns to jazz vibraphonists, just a few names are always mentioned: Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, Terry Gibbs, Red Norvo, Gary Burton and Bobby Hutcherson. Los Angeles-native Hutcherson has performed with Freddie Hubbard, Billy Childs, McCoy Tyner, Harold Land and many others. Starting tonight, Hutcherson brings his quartet to Catalina’s Bar & Grill for a four-nighter.

When Josie Walsh’s “Avalon” premiered at the Ivar Theatre in November, The Times called it “a stadium spectacle or Las Vegas showroom production in miniature.” Now this full-evening multidisciplinary fantasy moves to a bigger stage, with its talented singers, dancers, actors, aerialists, martial artists and rock musicians all ready to party in high Arthurian style. A former member of the Joffrey Ballet, Walsh directed and choreographed the production as well as dancing in it. Other leading performers include Ingrid Hoffman, Amy Smart and Demian Boergadine. There’s a plot about the conflict between hedonistic nature-worship and oppressive Christianity, but it never gets in the way of the high-spirited action filling the stage--and sometimes spilling into the audience.

There’s a distinctly Sundance-y feel to this year’s IFP/West-Los Angeles Film Festival which features Nicole Holofcener’s opening-night film “Lovely & Amazing,” Gary Winick’s “Tadpole” and the closing-night film, Miguel Arteta and Mike White’s “The Good Girl,” all of which screened in Park City, Utah, last January and will have commercial releases this summer. In addition to the higher-profile feature films, the 10-day event offers short-film programs, high school student films, collections of music videos, forums on new technology, “Poolside Chats” at the Chateau Marmont and “Coffee Talks” focusing on particular aspects of the filmmaking process.(See Screening Room, Page 17.)

In a career spanning 40 years, Yoko Ono has embraced a wide range of artistic mediums, from Conceptual installations to cutting-edge music, video and performance art. The exhibition opening today at Shoshana Wayne Gallery features both recent and historical photographic works, as well as several films, including “Vertical Memory,” in which Ono creates a composite image of her father, husband and son through 21 identical portraits, and “Mommy Was Beautiful,” an installation of 15 images of a woman’s breasts dangling from the ceiling, suggesting the view of a nursing infant.
