Yankees’ Lilly Shuts Out Padres

Ted Lilly sure knows how to take advantage of his time in the New York Yankee rotation.

When Andy Pettitte was on the disabled list because of elbow tendinitis, Lilly took his place and threw a one-hitter. With Orlando Hernandez still sidelined Saturday because of a strained back, Lilly pitched for the first time in two weeks and was brilliant again.

Lilly (3-5) pitched a three-hitter and struck out a career-high 11 for his first major league shutout, and the Yankees defeated the San Diego Padres, 1-0, at San Diego.

Lilly knows he doesn’t need to prove anything to Manager Joe Torre.

“When he gives me the ball, I’m happy to take it,” Lilly said.

While Lilly gave the Yankee bullpen a badly needed rest, New York spoiled the big league debut of right-hander Jake Peavy (0-1) in front of 60,021, the biggest in baseball this year.

Alfonso Soriano doubled on Peavy’s first pitch and scored on Jason Giambi’s double. Peavy, 21, gave up three hits in six innings.

“It was the best moment of my life when I walked off the field to a standing ovation,” Peavy said. “It was awesome. I knew that my job wasn’t to be awestruck by it, but to come out and pitch.”

Toronto 6, Arizona 3--Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer and Raul Mondesi hit a tiebreaking double at Phoenix, and the Blue Jays dropped the Diamondbacks into a tie with the Dodgers for first place in the NL West.

Houston 3, Seattle 2--Jeff Bagwell, out of the starting lineup after the death of St. Louis Cardinal pitcher and former Astro teammate Darryl Kile, hit a game-winning, pinch-hit single in the 12th inning at Houston. Bagwell, Craig Biggio and Brad Ausmus, among Kile’s best friends when he pitched for Houston from 1991-97, did not take batting practice and did not start. Kile’s Astro jersey--No. 57--hung in the Houston dugout.

Baltimore 4, San Francisco 2--Marty Cordova hit his third homer in less than 24 hours to support 30-year-old rookie Travis Driskill (5-0), who gave up two runs and six hits in five innings. All of his victories have come on the road.

Oakland 10, Cincinnati 3--Barry Zito (10-2) got his ninth consecutive victory, and Olmedo Saenz hit a two-run double and a solo homer at Cincinnati, sending the Reds to a season-high loss in a row.

Cleveland 5, Montreal 4--Bartolo Colon (10-4) gave up nine hits and two runs in eight innings at Montreal, and ended the Expos’ eight-game winning streak.

Atlanta 15, Chicago White Sox 2--Rafael Furcal’s three-run homer capped a seven-run fourth inning at Atlanta, where Paul Konerko provided Chicago’s runs with two home runs.

Texas 3, Pittsburgh 2--Ivan Rodriguez drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the seventh inning and the Rangers overcame a two-run deficit at Pittsburgh.

Minnesota 4, Philadelphia 1--Pinch-hitter Matthew LeCroy looped a go-ahead double to spark a three-run outburst with two out in the 11th inning at Philadelphia.

Kansas City 5, New York Mets 1--Raul Ibanez homered and drove in four runs at New York to help the Royals end an eight-game skid. Pedro Astacio (7-3) gave up four runs and four hits, and left after Ibanez’s double put the Royals ahead, 4-1, in the sixth.

Colorado 6, Tampa Bay 5--Todd Hollandsworth’s single to left field in the 11th inning drove in Todd Helton with one out at Denver. Tampa Bay’s Randy Winn had four hits and was a homer short of hitting for the cycle.
