Nicklaus Forced to Withdraw From Open
Jack Nicklaus, whose back problems forced him out of the Masters, withdrew Monday from this week’s U.S. Senior Open.
Nicklaus, 62, a two-time U.S. Senior Open champion, has played in only two official events since lingering back problems prompted him to pull out of the Ford Senior Players Championship last July after one round. Nicklaus was 69th at the Countrywide Tradition in April and withdrew after rounds of 71-78 at the Senior PGA Championship two weeks ago.
“I am better, but not good enough to play golf,” Nicklaus said in a statement released by the United States Golf Assn. “I have had great improvement, but not enough to play in a four-day tournament.”
J.C. Snead, who won the Senior Tour’s Greater Baltimore Classic on Sunday, has also withdrawn from the Open because of fatigue.
The $2.4-million U.S. Senior Open begins Thursday at Caves Valley Golf Club in Baltimore.
