Focus on Emotion
Was it pure coincidence or timely homage that the day after The Times’ June 21 obituary of award-winning sports photographer Morris Berman and his fantastic 1964 photo of defeated quarterback Y.A. Tittle, you ran an almost identical photo of another defeated athlete, U.S. soccer team forward Landon Donovan, on your front page (June 22)?
As interesting as I found the story of Berman’s life, I was even more touched by the visual proof that his brilliance in choosing to focus on the emotion, not just the action, of sports continues to influence the field of photography more than 35 years later.
