Devlish Will Go Fourth

Share

Thanks to upsets on Thursday by the likes of Demidoll, Pickled Bay and Pam And Gayla, tonight’s card at Hollywood Park became a lot more interesting.

There is a pick six carry-over of $406,192 awaiting, and the surest bet on the card is probably in the fourth race.

The 2-1 favorite on the morning line in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint for $25,000 maiden fillies and mares is Devlish and the 3-year-old filly, although not particularly fast, has been consistent.

In three races since she was claimed for $32,000 by trainer Leonard Duncan for owner Tom Thom, Devlish has finished second each time at odds of 5-2, 9-5 and 3-5.

Garrett Gomez has been the rider on all three occasions and will be aboard again tonight.

The fourth is one of four maiden races on the program and one of three in the pick six.

Patrick Valenzuela, the runaway leader in the jockey standings, could extend his lead. He is named on six horses and four are favorites on Russ Hudak’s morning line.

Race of the day: The fifth is a 1 1/16-mile turf race for $32,000 3-year-olds and contention runs deep in the field of 10. Pick-six players will be spreading.

Who’s hot: Todd Pletcher. The trainer won two more races at Belmont Park on Thursday and has taken over the lead in the standings.

Who’s not: Julio and Nick Canani. The father-and-son trainers have the distinction of having put Hall of Fame riders on their final losers. Julio Canani trained Patchy Groundfog, who was fourth in Bill Shoemaker’s last race in 1990, and Nick Canani trains Come Back Ronnie, who provided Chris McCarron with his final loss when he was third last Sunday.

Exotically speaking: A trifecta in the third keying Comte Du Rainier on top of Ron Cherry and Dog Days in the two hole and all in the third spot.
