Music to His Ears

I am a lover of music from the era of Little Milton, Jackie Wilson, Millie Jackson, Little Willie John, Bobby Bland, Motown, Stax, Chess and all the other magnificent music makers and artists, soul and jazz, that Alicia Keys and India.Arie, these absolutely beautiful young sistas, so well represent (“Sisters Who Know a Woman’s Worth,” by Isaac Guzman, Feb. 24). Those of us who are their parents and grandparents, we salute them and are so very proud of them. They represent the best not just in black, but all young people.
Of particular note, they are refusing to buy into the self-debasement by use of the “self-hating” N-word. It is the most venal and violent word in any language, and thank you Ms. Keys and Ms. Arie, for making an old black brotha happy and proud.
