‘Fuelish’ Findings

Share

Seldom have I read a more ridiculous claim than “increased fuel economy has not led to reduced dependence on imported oil” (“Government Should Steer Clear of the Fuel Economy Issue,” Commentary, March 1).

Maybe the reason is that there are so many more cars on the road, driving more miles, and the increase in the gas-guzzling SUVs over the last few years. What would our dependence be if there were no CAFE standards (“corporate average fuel economy”)? But then, what would you expect from the Cato Institute?
