Dollar Bill Makes No Sense

Share

Dollar Bill, one of the most overrated horses to run in recent years, will make his comeback in today’s ninth race at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

Owned by Gary and Mary West and trained by Dallas Stewart, the son of Peaks And Valleys became one of the supposed leading candidates for the 2001 Kentucky Derby after winning the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs in the fall of 2000 and the Risen Star at the Fair Grounds early last year.

He then had a very troubled trip in the Louisiana Derby, winding up fourth, beaten by only 21/2 lengths at 17-10. He had problems in other races, but the bottom line is he hasn’t won since the Risen Star some 121/2 months ago.

Idle since finishing third behind Point Given and E Dubai in the Travers on Aug. 25 and after having a bone chip removed from one of his knees, Dollar Bill will be trying to end a six-race losing streak this afternoon. His opponents at a mile and 40 yards include On Your Mark, Valid Prime, Storm Cruiser, Connected, True Concern, Desert Demon, Tahkodha Hills and Miner’s Prize.

Robby Albarado will ride the 4-year-old for the first time.

At Gulfstream Park, Pleasant County, whose fifth-place finish at 2-5 on Feb. 15 led to some record show payoffs, will try to make amends in today’s ninth race.

A winner of two of four for Mark Hennig, she will race on Lasix for the first time in the seven-furlong contest.

Race of the day: Eight sprinters are scheduled to go about 61/2 furlongs on the turf in today’s seventh at Santa Anita. Romanzo, impressive in his debut on the course last month, is the 5-2 morning line choice.

Who’s hot: Muschi. A loser of 32 of her first 34 starts, the 7-year-old Mark Chip mare has won two of her last three and has definitely improved since joining trainer Bill Morey’s barn. She is a contender in today’s fourth at Golden Gate Fields.

Who’s not: Those who bet to show on Love At Noon in Wednesday’s seventh at Santa Anita. The 2-5 favorite in the field of five finished fourth and led to some inflated payoffs on the first three finishers.

Exotically speaking: A pick three singling Benderosa in the second; using Meteor Game, Cow In Solana and Nice Fish in the third, and Rock The Stone and Burma Red in the fourth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 3/147. Money: Previous day/meet total: $15.80/$869.40. Total money bet: $890.
