Power Play Is Weak

Share

Among the issues Mighty Duck management needs to deal with during the off-season is the team’s power play.

The Ducks rank last in the NHL on the power play at 12.1%. They have been blanked on the power play in 12 one-goal losses and three ties.

“We have to do something that will trigger our power play more than anything,” Coach Bryan Murray said. “Is that a goal scorer? A point man? There is no question that we need to get one of our guys to step up here and take charge of the power play. Or we have to do something in that area to make a big difference next year.”

What Murray seeks is someone to give the power play some oomph. That probably means an off-season move, preferably for a scorer who can play on the first line. But, for now, the Ducks will look inward.

Paul Kariya, who has 10 of the Ducks’ 38 power-play goals, will get another crack at that role during the last 15 games. Kariya was an effective point man in 1998-99.
