Taxpayers would get an extra 15 days to file their income tax returns if they do it electronically under legislation approved by the House Ways and Means Committee.

The Treasury Department estimates that enactment of the legislation would prompt 4 million more taxpayers to file their returns electronically. The bill would change the April 15 filing and payment deadline for the first time since 1954. Taxpayers who file and pay electronically would have until April 30 to get their returns to the IRS.
