A Van Nuys man has been charged with leaving an accident and evading officers in connection with a police chase that ended with an elderly couple being struck and seriously injured outside the Beverly Center, according to the district attorney’s office.

Tremine Tillman, 23, of Van Nuys is scheduled for arraignment April 9. He is being held in County Jail on $250,000 bond.

The injured couple, Anna Polivoda, 76, and her husband, Henry, 79, were taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Saturday after a car struck them as they crossed a street near the mall.

Anna Polivoda suffered a head injury, a broken leg and a broken thumb. Her husband suffered a broken leg and a severe concussion, according to a family member. Their daughter, Stephany Yablow, said Tuesday that her parents, both of whom survived the Holocaust in Poland, are expected to remain in the hospital for at least two weeks before being transferred to a convalescent facility.

Police have said officers initiated the pursuit near La Brea Avenue and Washington Boulevard because the car registration did not match the license plate sticker.
