From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Downtown’s “Welcome to River Street” sign is back on EBay.

The sign was erected as part of a beautification project designed to draw attention to River Street, along with a widened road, and yellow street lights to match the sign. But the council got hundreds of e-mails, phone messages and letters ridiculing the sign.

The giant blue and yellow sign, erected and built by the city for $83,000, was on EBay before, but by the time the auction closed it had a top bid of $6,669.

The minimum bid was set at $5,000 with bidding set in $100 increments.

Councilman Ed Porter said he expected much more, so the sign reappeared Friday on EBay.

The starting bid is now $7,000 with bidding set to end Monday.
