Busy Day for Lumpkins

Share

With a lot of the big-name riders in Kentucky for the Oaks and Derby, local fans will get their first in-person look at jockey Jason Lumpkins.

Second to Russell Baze in the standings at Bay Meadows, Lumpkins is named on four horses this afternoon, then is scheduled to be on three more tonight at Bay Meadows. Hollywood Park has a 1:15 p.m. post time because of the early kickoff on Saturday at Churchill Downs, but Bay Meadows is sticking with its usual 7:20 p.m. start.

Two of Lumpkins’ mounts in Inglewood are trained by Nick Hines and both are contenders.

Runaway Susie, who has won four times up north, drops a notch after a third at Bay Meadows in the first race, a $12,500 claimer for older fillies and mares at six furlongs.

Three races later, Eric Da Bomb will try to go wire-to-wire for the Hines-Lumpkins combination in an allowance race at 11/16 miles.

The gelding won two in a row for Lumpkins at Bay Meadows and Pleasanton last year, and, on March 30, they lost by a head to Workum at Golden Gate Fields.

Lumpkins’ other Hollywood Park mounts are Investor’s Dream, a Brazilian-bred making his first U.S. start for Richard Mandella in the seventh, and the maiden filly Hard To Call, making her second start in the eighth for trainer Dean Greenman. At Bay Meadows, Lumpkins is supposed to ride Blue Moonray in the first, Nice Fish in the third and Winter Melon Soup in the fifth.

Race of the day: Outstanding Hero, Pacing The Cage, Macabe and Fleetstreet Dancer are among the contenders in an interesting turf sprint.

The $51,000 optional claimer goes as the fifth on the card at Hollywood Park.

Who’s hot: Mark Guidry. The jockey won with four of his first 10 mounts at Churchill Downs.

Who’s not: Double Our Flag. The 8-year-old gelding tries for his first win in today’s second at Bay Meadows in his 34th start.
