‘Spider-Man’: A Record $114.8 Million
“Spider-Man” fended off the Green Goblin and then raked in the greenbacks, smashing box-office records left and right.
The Columbia Pictures film, starring Tobey Maguire as the web-slinging comic book superhero and directed by Sam Raimi, grossed $114.8 million in its first three days in release, far eclipsing the previous record three-day opening of $90.3 million set only last November by Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”

“Spider-Man” also had the best single-day gross in history with Saturday’s $43.6 million; the biggest per-screen average for a wide release with $31,769; and became the fastest film to gross $100 million--three days, said Jeff Blake, president of worldwide marketing and distribution for Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group.
