Anaheim police Tuesday were looking for a man suspected of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl who later had a miscarriage in a school lavatory.

Nabor Estrada Bartolo, 31, rented a room in the East Anaheim home of the girl’s family with his wife and three children, said Sgt. Rick Martinez, a spokesman for the Anaheim Police Department. Bartolo has not been seen for nearly two weeks, Martinez said.

“We have not been able to find him. We’ve contacted all the relatives and gone to the places where he’s known to hang out. Now we’re asking the public for help,” he said.

On April 26, the girl told officials at Sycamore Junior High School, where she is a student, that she was ill and needed to use the lavatory, Martinez said.

“There was a health clerk there trying to assist,” Martinez said, “but the girl kept resisting her attempts to help. When the girl miscarried the fetus, she was able to hide it under her clothing and give some excuse as to why she was ill. Ultimately, school officials notified the girl’s mother, who came and picked her up.”

Police found the fetus two days later in a freezer at the girl’s home, Martinez said, after her mother learned of the miscarriage and called them. In interviews with investigators, he said, the eighth-grader indicated Bartolo was the father.

“Apparently, he had sex with her on more than one occasion,” Martinez said. “When she discovered she was pregnant, he obtained pills in Mexico known to cause miscarriages and gave her those pills. We believe that he also pushed on her stomach hoping to cause a miscarriage, which he ultimately did.”

On Monday, Bartolo was charged with several counts of sexual molestation by force, as well as assault and child endangerment -- charges that could land him in prison for more than 40 years.

“We believe he’s on the run,” Martinez said. The girl is in protective custody at Orangewood Children’s Home in Orange.
