City Attempting to Save Money-Strapped Zoo

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

City officials are trying to find ways to save the city’s zoo, which is in dire need of funding for operations, animal birth control and building repair.

The city allocates $1.2 million a year to the zoo, but it takes $3 million to operate, and there has been no money for improvements in three decades, Director Ralph Waterhouse said.

Without cash to expand exhibits, large animals must be put on birth control because there is no room for their offspring, Waterhouse said.
