Mom Deserves Special Meal on Her Special Day

Brunch: Max restaurant has kicked off its brunch service and will be serving brunch on Mother’s Day. It offers barbecue shrimp salad ($11.50), chopped salad ($9.50), leek quiche ($8.95), stir-fried filet mignon hash with asparagus and poached eggs ($12.50) and four varieties of eggs Benedict ($7.95-$12.95). The Beach House begins its annual summer Sunday brunch service on Mother’s Day with dishes such as banana French toast ($14), blackberry pancakes ($12), smoked salmon with all the trimmings--bagel, cream cheese, onions and capers ($15) and crab cakes Benedict ($16). Brunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside or on the newly enclosed patio with heaters. It will run until the end of July. The Beach House, 100 W. Channel Road, Santa Monica; (310) 454-8299.

Frank Fronda, the chef at Napa Valley Grille, is flying his mother out from New York to help in the kitchen on Mother’s Day. Anna Fronda will cook beside her son in the display kitchen, and the two will send out a family-style brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Entrees, which serve two people, run $22 to $32 and range from rigatoni with meatballs to chicken stuffed with crab and pancetta, with shrimp in marinara and roasted eggplant among the other choices. El Dorado Cantina is throwing a mariachi brunch that will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The menu includes Mexican chocolate waffles ($6.50), a Mexican eggs Benedict with chipotle hollandaise ($9) and huevos rancheros ($8). Brunch and Dinner: Chadwick offers a three-course brunch for moms from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Dishes include a tomato tart, warm baby beets, soft-scrambled duck egg, cranberry doughnuts, green and white asparagus, sourdough pancakes, fried egg sandwich and strawberry shortcake. It’s $40 plus tax and tip. Dinner, from 6-9 p.m., will offer the regular menu. (Chadwick will resume regular weekday lunch service June 3.) Chadwick, 267 S. Cha Cha Cha Encino sets up a Caribbean brunch buffet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Some of the dishes on it: swordfish skewers with tomatillo salsa, shrimp salad, jerk chicken, black beans, plantains, banana French toast, vegetable frittata. The price is $25 plus tax and tip for adults, $12 plus tax and tip for children 9 and younger. Pastis has a three-course menu for Mom, which will be available from noon to 10 p.m. Appetizer choices include a yellow gazpacho with grilled prawns and a grilled eggplant terrine. Entrees run from risotto with baby artichokes to roasted leg of lamb to grilled loup de mer. Desserts include strawberry soup and banana-coconut-cardamom tart. The price is $35 plus tax and tip. 71 Palm in Ventura gives Mom a glass of Champagne and orange juice at brunch (from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.). The three-course menu starts with a spring salad. Entree choices include a prime-rib sandwich and cold poached salmon with a tarragon mayonnaise. The price is $28.95 for adults, $12.50 for children 12 and under. Dinner: JiRaffe kicks off dinner (5-9 p.m.) with a Bellini cocktail. In addition to the regular menu there’ll be specials, including lobster paella, roasted duck breast salad, halibut in a crock, scallops with porcini mushrooms and cote de bouef with Swiss chard and green peppercorns. Pammolli serves a Mother’s Day dinner beginning at 5 p.m. The special four-course menu offers asparagus soup, spinach and ricotta gnocchi, broiled striped bass, chicken breast with balsamic vinegar and warm apple crumble, among other choices.
