Bruins’ Summer Practices to Start at Cal Lutheran

Hoping to enhance team unity, the UCLA football team will conduct the first week of summer training camp at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. It will be the first time the Bruins have held practices off campus since 1984 when they did so to accommodate the Olympics.

The Bruins will hold two practices a day and live in dorms at Cal Lutheran from Aug. 17 until Aug. 24, when they will return to UCLA for a scrimmage at Drake Stadium. Practices will be open to the public.

“We feel that the move to Cal Lutheran will provide our team a chance to come together and bond,” Coach Bob Toledo said. “Team chemistry has become an increasingly important component of success in athletics and being at Cal Lutheran will give us a chance to lay the foundation.”

The move will shorten the commute for Toledo, who lives in Westlake Village, and several assistant coaches, among them defensive coordinator Phil Snow, who lives in Simi Valley.

The Dallas Cowboys trained at Cal Lutheran for 27 years before moving their camp to Austin, Texas, in 1990.
