From Times Wire Reports

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta announced a $75-million Federal Transit Administration grant Friday to the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District to help bring BART commuter trains to San Francisco International Airport.

During the ceremony at the transit station in Millbrae, Mineta was joined by BART officials. He stressed the Bush administration’s efforts to promote mobility and reduce congestion through public transportation.

The San Francisco Airport Extension Project is an 8.7-mile, four-station addition to the BART system. The project consists of a 7.5-mile mainline extension from the existing BART station at Colma to Millbrae. An additional 1.2-mile spur will take BART trains directly to a station adjoining the new International Terminal at the airport.
