Man Found Guilty in Drag-Racing Deaths
From Times Staff Reports
A Santa Ana man was convicted Wednesday of two counts of second-degree murder in a drag-racing crash that killed a man and his 6-year-old daughter last summer.
A jury, however, acquitted Arturo Ortiz of driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or above, and deadlocked on a related charge of driving while impaired by alcohol.
Ortiz, 21, was drag-racing Aug. 3 when his pickup truck crashed into a car, fatally injuring 35-year-old Escobar Estrada, who died at the scene.
Estrada’s 6-year-old daughter, Michelle, died a week later.
