WHEN UCLA HAS THE BALL

Tailback Tyler Ebell, who reached 100 yards rushing against the top Pac-10 rushing defense last week, might challenge 200 yards against the soft Arizona flex defense, which is last in the conference against the run. Running back Manuel White will play for the first time since injuring a hamstring five weeks ago. Senior linebacker Lance Briggs is the top Wildcat defender. Quarterback Drew Olson will be given the opportunity to throw downfield more than last week, but the emphasis will remain on the freshman not making critical mistakes. Backup Matt Moore will play at least one series. Arizona has only three interceptions.

WHEN ARIZONA HAS THE BALL

The Wildcats set a school record for fewest total yards in a game with 93 last week against Oregon State and have rushed for negative yardage in two consecutive games. Jason Johnson is still a dangerous passer, however, and with 2,433 yards passing, he needs only 88 to surpass Tom Tunnicliffe as the school record holder. Backup quarterback Nic Costa is expected to play. Receiver Bobby Wade has eight 100-yard receiving games in the last 12 and ranks fifth all-time in the Pac-10 with 208 catches. Wade has 71 catches this season and also leads the conference with a 13.6 punt-return average.

KEYS TO UCLA VICTORY

1. Flex mental muscles: Freshman quarterback Olson and freshman center Mike McCloskey must avoid getting confused by Arizona’s flex defense and make sound protection calls.

2. Easy does it: Neither Olson nor Moore has thrown an interception in the last two games. The freshman quarterbacks must continue to avoid mistakes even while opening up the offense in measured increments.

3. Rush week: The weak Wildcat running attack gives a green light to defensive end Dave Ball and other Bruin pass rushers to zero in on quarterbacks Johnson and Costa.
