Fire Destroys Homes South of Sydney
Ten homes and businesses were reportedly destroyed by a wildfire southwest of Sydney as strong winds and dry conditions fed bush blazes in the region.
Rural Fire Service spokesman John Winter said the situation at Mittagong, 60 miles southwest of Sydney, was “very grave.”
Thick black smoke hung over nearby towns as residents hosed down their roofs to protect their homes from the flames. Almost 100 bush fires are burning across Australia’s New South Wales state. Some families were evacuated north of Sydney in the Hunter Valley wine region.
