From Times Staff Reports

A U.S. District Court judge has set bail at $150,000 for a man arrested at Los Angeles International Airport after the man allegedly tried to pass through a security checkpoint with an 18-inch knife hidden in a cane.

Screeners who spotted the knife Monday on an X-ray screen at Tom Bradley International Terminal contacted police, who opened the cane, according to an affidavit by FBI Agent Laughn Rowe.

Amir Farhang Motamedi, 71, of West Los Angeles claimed that he bought the cane at a store in Chinatown and didn’t know there was a knife inside, the affidavit states. Motamedi had reservations on a flight to Zurich, officials said.
