Value: In Beholder’s Eye

We echoed Daryl H. Miller’s sentiment as we sat through last Friday night’s performance of “Mamma Mia!” at the Ahmanson: We spent $150 for this (“Sure, It’s a Boogie Fest, but Is It Worth the Price?” Sept. 27)?

However, Miller was being charitable in his review. He only commented on the amateurish nature of the scenery and book. The performance that we saw included dancers out of step and singers off the beat. The songs were all in one dynamic range: loud. The sound mix was such that the actors’ words were muffled by the music.

Shouldn’t we be able to expect that a production brought to the Ahmanson Theatre by the Center Theatre Group will at least meet a minimum standard of professional performance?

Talk about picking on minutiae for a critique. “Mamma Mia!” was fun, the audience loved it, the music is great but the set didn’t appeal to him and the story line wasn’t deep enough? Give me a break.

I, along with a packed house, was enthralled every minute. What more could you ask for the price of a ticket?
