WHEN UCLA HAS THE BALL

Manuel White will play more at tailback than fullback and could reach 20 carries for the first time in his career. UCLA will try to establish a running game against a Beaver defense that allows only 107 yards a game on the ground. Linebackers Richard Seigler and Nick Barnett are among the best in the Pac-10. The Oregon State secondary, led by cornerback Dennis Weathersby, is opportunistic. Bruin quarterback Cory Paus must take what the defense gives and avoid forcing balls into a defense that ranks third in the nation with 12 interceptions. Tight end Mike Seidman had a big game against San Diego State and again could be a primary target.

WHEN OREGON STATE HAS THE BALL

Like UCLA, the Beavers strive for a balanced attack. Quarterback Derek Anderson has thrown for 1,281 yards and 15 touchdowns, although USC held him to 80 yards last week. Steven Jackson leads the Pac-10 with 603 yards rushing and is especially dangerous on draw plays. James Newson has 25 catches for 379 yards and five touchdowns. The UCLA defensive line, weakened by a foot injury to tackle Rodney Leisle, will blitz to pressure Anderson. The Bruins hope the real Beaver offense is the one USC shut out, not the one that averaged 47 points in four victories.

KEYS TO UCLA VICTORY

1. Taking advantage of injuries to the Oregon State offensive line and pressuring quarterback Derek Anderson.

2. Quarterback Cory Paus must play relatively mistake-free against a Beaver defense that averages 2.4 interceptions a game.

3. Maintaining poise in a hostile road environment and having fewer penalties and turnovers than Oregon State.
