Dementieva Beats Hingis in Germany

Martina Hingis was upset Thursday by Elena Dementieva, 6-3, 6-1, in the second round of the Porsche Grand Prix at Filderstadt, Germany.

In two other upsets, Russia’s Tatiana Panova defeated third-seeded Jelena Dokic, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, and Myriam Casanova ousted fourth-seeded Justine Henin, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Kim Clijsters breezed into the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Iva Majoli, and fifth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo beat Anne Kremer, 6-1, 6-2.

Three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten outlasted Switzerland’s Marc Rosset, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5), to reach the quarterfinals of the Lyon Grand Prix at France, where he will next face Russian Marat Safin. Safin’s Davis Cup teammate, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, seeded second, was eliminated by Nicolas Escude of France, 7-6 (5), 6-4.... Top-seeded Tommy Haas was upset by Austria’s Juergen Melzer, 6-4, 6-3, at the CA Trophy in Vienna. Also, second-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero lost to Czech Bohdan Ulihrach, 6-4, 6-2. In other matches, American James Blake defeated Nicolas Kiefer 6-4, 7-6 (4), and sixth-seeded Roger Federer defeated Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4.

OneWorld of Seattle improved to 6-0 in the America’s Cup challenger series today at Auckland, New Zealand, and the Swiss yacht, Alinghi, ended Oracle’s unbeaten run.

OneWorld had little trouble in a 21-second win over France’s winless Le Defi. Challenger series leader Alinghi beat Oracle, backed by Larry Ellison, by 1:43.

Hofstra guard Rick Apodaca and forward Wendell Gibson disclosed that they tested positive for marijuana, leading to their suspensions.

Apodaca and Gibson released a statement in which they admitted they each failed a drug test. The players were suspended by the school for the first 14 games of the season, and won’t be eligible to play again until Jan. 18.

Qualifying for the UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., was suspended because of rain after 18 cars made runs.

NASCAR called off the qualifying session after a rain delay of more than an hour and told the remaining competitors to return to the track today to continue the session. There are 49 cars attempting to make the field.

Olympic figure skating bronze medalist Tim Goebel, who trains in El Segundo, withdrew from the Skate Canada and Trophee Lalique Grand Prix competitions because of a strained right hip. Goebel, who followed his Olympic success with a silver medal at the World Championships, was expected to be off the ice one to two weeks.

William Joppy of the United States defended his World Boxing Assn. middleweight title, stopping Japan’s Naotaka Hozumi in the 10th round at Tokyo.

Colombia’s Santiago Botero won the time trial at the World Cycling Championships at Zolder, Belgium, finishing the 25.1-mile race in 48 minutes 8.45 seconds.
