By George, Titans Run for It

The Tennessee Titans got a much-needed victory by sticking with what they used to do best.

Eddie George rushed for 100 yards for the first time this season and scored two touchdowns, and the Titans ended a losing streak at four by beating the Jacksonville Jaguars, 23-14, on Sunday.

The Titans were last in rushing in the league, and George had averaged only 2.7 yards per carry. But Coach Jeff Fisher said running the ball always is the plan against Jacksonville and nothing would stop him from sticking with George, who ran for 113 yards

“He has confidence going in every week that he’s going to make a difference, and this week, he did. Eddie George is fine,” Fisher said.

The Jaguars (3-2) had won three in a row and were tied for the AFC South lead. But the Titans (2-4) won for the first time since their opener and defeated Jacksonville for the seventh time in their last nine meetings.

“This is a win we need to get on the right track, and the players deserve all the credit for this, because they responded this week and got themselves ready under difficult circumstances,” Fisher said.

Tennessee knocked out a starting quarterback for a second consecutive game and faced a rookie the rest of the way.

Last week, the Titans knocked Danny Wuerffel out of the game but rookie Patrick Ramsey came on to lead the Washington Redskins to a 31-14 victory.

This time, it was Mark Brunell, the league’s second-rated passer, who suffered a concussion after being hit at the sideline by cornerback Samari Rolle on the first series. Brunell played one more series before leaving, and rookie David Garrard replaced him.

The Titans held Jacksonville to a season-low 198 yards, 68 passing. Kevin Carter had two of the Titans’ three sacks, and the Titans intercepted two of Garrard’s seven passes. He completed four.
