Made from Russian River valley grapes, which produce some of the best Pinot Noirs in California, this one is a California classic, with a delicate scent of raspberry, clean bright fruit, fine-spun texture and a discreet touch of oak. At this price, it’s a steal. This is one to buy by the case: It suits any occasion. How often do you find an everyday wine that’s good enough for company, but also inexpensive enough to lavish on a boeuf bourguignon?

If you can’t find this one, try Castle Rock’s 2001 Pinot Noir “Napa,” also very good and in the same price range.
