Five Ventura County firefighters were treated for eye and skin irritation Thursday after being overcome by tear gas fumes during a training exercise.

The incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. when firefighters were sawing into the roof of an abandoned house in the 11000 block of Santa Ana Road. The firefighters were practicing ventilation techniques that slow attic fires.

The gas fumes had lingered in the roof for several weeks after a training exercise by sheriff’s SWAT team members, said Sandi Wells, a Fire Department spokeswoman.

The firefighters had their eyes flushed with a solution and took showers to remove residue from their skin, Wells said.
