NHL to Charge for Online Video

Share

Following the lead of major league baseball and the National Basketball Assn., the National Hockey League is starting to charge fans for online video.

The NHL announced a new service offering video highlights of goals, saves and other action for $4.95 a month, as well as “classic” games on demand for $1.95 to $2.95 per viewing.

The league, which still will offer some complete games and highlights for free through Microsoft Corp.’s MSN Sports Web site, uses Microsoft’s Windows Media format for online video.

Major league baseball and the NBA, in contrast, use technology from RealNetworks Inc. for their subscription video services.
