Canadian Yann Martel won the Booker Prize for “Life of Pi,” his quirky novel about a boy’s survival after a shipwreck.

“I feel like I am in the arms of a beautiful woman,” said the Montreal novelist, 39. “I am overwhelmed, delighted and honored.”

“It was a close-run thing with another book,” prize administrator Martyn Goff said. But he refused to say who was the runner-up.
