Free Market Would End Teacher Hiring Problem

Share

Re “Schools’ ‘Emergency’ Is Lack of Cheap Teachers,” Aug. 25:

Two letters lamenting the lack of access by highly qualified and experienced teachers to the education market along with the original story all missed the point. School boards do not want to hire the best teachers not only because they are too expensive to start with but because they are not allowed to hire them at a price they could afford.

If we had a free market in education, the best teachers would get hired at a salary they would be willing to take. Then as they perform as well as they claim they can, they would earn better pay faster than their mediocre colleagues and we would all be winners, especially the students.
