Players Don’t Comment on Washburn

The Angels closed the clubhouse door Tuesday afternoon, holding a team meeting to inform players that pitcher Jarrod Washburn was under investigation for alleged sexual assault. With few details available, most players--including team leader Darin Erstad--declined to comment.

But the Angels didn’t lose focus when they got off to the worst start in franchise history. And, with a playoff berth close at hand, closer Troy Percival said no one in Tuesday’s meeting had to remind players to keep their focus on the field.

“When we were 6-14, nothing had to be said,” Percival said. “We knew we were a good team then. We know we’re a good team now.

“Nobody in this group is inexperienced enough to have to have somebody come up to them and say, keep your focus.”

The Angels plan to put tickets on sale Sept. 21 for potential division series games at Edison Field. Tickets will be sold for the first round of the playoffs only, with American League championship series and World Series sales depending upon the Angels advancing in the playoffs.

Second baseman and pinch-running specialist Chone Figgins has three at-bats in his first three weeks in the major leagues, but he’ll get plenty of playing time after the season ends. Figgins is one of six players selected by the Angels for the Arizona Fall League, limited to top prospects.

Class-A Rancho Cucamonga right-hander Bobby Jenks, whose performance has not yet approached the promise evident in his 100-mph fastball, also was picked, along with right-hander Chris Bootcheck and outfielder Nathan Haynes from triple-A Salt Lake, outfielder Kenny James from double-A Arkansas, and Rancho Cucamonga right-hander Derrick Turnbow, who pitched in Anaheim in 2000 before arm surgery last season set back his career.

The Angels’ triple-A Salt Lake affiliate staged a dramatic comeback to win the first game of the best-of-five Pacific Coast League championship series Tuesday, scoring four times in the ninth inning for a 7-5 victory over Edmonton.

Update--Third baseman Troy Glaus was a late scratch from Tuesday’s lineup after two sprained fingers in his left hand made it difficult for him to swing. Glaus jammed the middle and ring fingers of the hand on a headfirst slide Monday, but X-rays were negative. Glaus is listed as day-to-day.
