Yankees Won’t Penalize Wells

David Wells won’t be disciplined by the New York Yankees for his early-morning fight in a diner last weekend.
General Manager Brian Cashman met with the pitcher for about 30 minutes during the first game of Tuesday’s split doubleheader with Baltimore and informed Wells of the decision.
“There was no discipline taken because there was no discipline warranted,” Cashman said. “I talked to the police and got a good sense of what went on.
“The matter is closed as far as the Yankees are concerned. He’ll pitch Thursday night.”
After beating the Detroit Tigers on Friday night, Wells was at a Manhattan diner at about 5:50 a.m. Saturday with a friend.
Rocco Graziosa, 27, of Yonkers, N.Y., walked in with some friends and began talking with Wells. After the conversation, Graziosa went to his table and made a remark about Wells’ mother, who is dead.
Graziosa then grabbed a butter knife off the table, began waving it and attacked Wells, police said. Wells was punched in the head and lost two teeth.
Graziosa was arrested and charged with assault and menacing.

Boston outfielder Manny Ramirez was fined an undisclosed amount by Manager Grady Little for not running out a grounder in Monday’s game against Tampa Bay.
Ramirez hit a check-swing grounder to pitcher Tanyon Sturtze in the third inning, and immediately headed toward the dugout.
Little thought about taking Ramirez out at that time but opted not to when Ramirez apologized to his teammates in the dugout.
Grady and Little talked at length before Tuesday’s game against the Devil Rays, and Ramirez was in the starting lineup.
“It’s done,” said Little.

Chicago Cub catcher Todd Hundley was fined for missing the team picture Tuesday.
Hundley and reliever Kyle Farnsworth were the only players to miss the picture. But Cub interim Manager Bruce Kimm said Farnsworth was excused because he had a doctor’s appointment.
“Todd’s been fined and that’s pretty much it,” Kimm said without specifying the amount.
