Let’s Take a Tour Around the NFL

The Redskins really aren’t very good, and Steve Spurrier knows it. Did you notice, Steve didn’t throw anything in anger Monday in the rout by the Eagles? He throws in anger when stupid mistakes are made. He deals realistically with ineptitude. That’s how he handled the Tampa Bay Bandits.

It looks like a pretty long road before he can start throwing things frequently again.

After Donovan McNabb’s good performance against the hapless Redskins, I heard several commentators proclaim him the NFL’s best quarterback. The facts say otherwise.

In the last three years, Kurt Warner has thrown for about 13,000 yards, 98 touchdowns, has a QB rating of over 100 and has been to two Super Bowls. In the same time McNabb has about 8,000 yards and about 50 TDs and a QB rating of less than 90. And he has never been to a Super Bowl.

One of the main measuring sticks for quarterbacks is getting his team to the Super Bowl. At this point, Warner is working with a yardstick, McNabb with a grade-school ruler.

How dare Mal Florence reprint Steve Rosenbloom’s derogatory comments regarding John Madden in Morning Briefing? Madden is the finest and most entertaining color commentator professional football may have ever known.

I quote from Rosenbloom’s column: “ ... I don’t want to go on a rant, but Madden is overrated, overdone, and overstaying his welcome. That’s my opinion. I could be wrong.” No doubt!

Each season, it’s becoming more difficult to watch pro football with the increasing danger of injury. On almost every play, it seems, some player is in danger of hurting his arm patting himself on the back for doing what he is highly paid for.

Mal Florence lists six Heisman Trophy winners without an NFL career in a Morning Briefing trivia answer. I submit Gino Toretta for consideration. Five total completions for 41 yards in small parts of two games with two different teams three years apart does not a “career” make.
