Owens Lets Off Steam

San Francisco receiver Terrell Owens doesn’t care if the 49ers were injured and ailing. He believes they didn’t beat the Washington Redskins badly enough on Sunday.

“I’m not going to bite my tongue,” Owens said Tuesday as the 49ers packed up for several days off during their bye week. “Like I said, we need to develop killer instinct, for whatever reason. That’s it. I said what I had to say. I’m not going to backtrack on what I said. I said what I said Sunday, and that’s what I meant.”

Owens was angry Coach Steve Mariucci ordered the team to kneel on the ball for the final two plays of an eight-minute drive, running out the clock at the Redskin 16. The 49ers won, 20-10.

Mariucci said he decided to play conservatively because several of his players were out with injuries, and many more were ill from a stomach virus.

Owens was among several 49ers who wanted to pound the Redskins, in part because of Washington’s 38-7 exhibition victory over San Francisco at Osaka, Japan.

Right tackle Kenyatta Walker and left guard Kerry Jenkins will be sidelined up to four weeks each because of injuries, and left guard Kerry Jenkins will be out two to four weeks because of a small crack in his left leg.

Linebacker Derrick Brooks (strained left hamstring) and cornerback Brian Kelly (right shoulder sprain) are listed as questionable for Sunday’s game at Cincinnati.

The Buccaneers re-signed guard Russ Hochstein, who was released last week when the team signed tight end Rickey Dudley, and traded safety David Gibson to Indianapolis for an undisclosed draft pick.

Starting center Hank Fraley signed a five-year contract extension with Philadelphia.... Defensive tackle Ernest Grant signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Bears after playing last season with the Miami Dolphins.
