O.C. Bishop Should Avoid Mahony’s Errors

Share

Re “Archdiocese to Cut Programs, Jobs to Close Budget Gap,” Sept. 19:

Attention, Bishop Tod Brown:

Please learn from the mistakes of Cardinal Roger Mahony. His comment in the article said the $4.3-million deficit, proposed layoffs and ministry cancellations are not related to the grandiose new cathedral cost. Right.

He also forgot to include the millions of dollars in abuse litigation settlements and the potential for further huge judgments imposed by the courts.

This is not the time to be building an expensive diocesan cathedral that will be used by a small percentage of the population. And who can predict how many more abuse settlements our diocese will have to fund? All extraneous expenditures should be looked at closely.
