Sheriff’s deputies shot and wounded an Arcadia man who opened fire on them Wednesday night after a 12-hour standoff, authorities said.

It began about 7 a.m., when deputies went to a mobile home park in the 4200 block of Live Oak Avenue on a report that a delusional man with a rifle had barricaded himself inside a building.

After trying to persuade him to come out, deputies summoned a sheriff’s SWAT team and crisis negotiators, Deputy Alba Yates said.

Just before noon, crisis negotiators made contact with the man, who was believed to be alone, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Paul Patterson.

About 7:30 p.m., the man “exchanged gunfire with team members,” Sgt. Rick Myers said.

No deputies were injured, he said, but the suspect was shot once in the upper torso. His name and condition were not released.

A resident of the mobile home park, Jerry Gutman, said the suspect works at night. A neighbor told Gutman that the suspect appeared to be heading home about 6:30 a.m. when, instead of going to his mobile home, he walked to a community recreation building and barricaded himself inside.

Everything was quiet, Gutman said, until “we heard a big boom, like a big grenade going off, then we heard two quick shots after that.”
