Zoo to Inoculate Birds Against West Nile Virus

The anticipated spread of the West Nile virus throughout California this summer is forcing the Charles Paddock Zoo to protect its rare birds with an unproven vaccine.
The zoo’s collection of about 30 birds -- including ibis, spoonbills and Inca terns -- will receive an inoculation that is “not very effective,” said Jeff Chang, research microbiologist with the Centers for Disease Control.
“We really have nothing else for a defense,” zoo director Alan Baker said.
