Pitchers Brian Anderson and Carl Sadler of the Cleveland Indians turned into crime fighters over the weekend, chasing down a youth who attempted to steal a purse from a woman in a restaurant in San Francisco.

They then took the thief back to the restaurant, returned the purse and held him there until police arrived.

“It was an instinctive thing,” Anderson said before Sunday’s game in Oakland. “They picked the wrong restaurant with a couple of athletes who are on a losing streak.”

The Indians had lost five in a row before Sunday.

Sadler, Anderson and two friends arrived at the restaurant shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, and within 10 minutes noticed a youth grabbing a purse and running out of the restaurant. Anderson and Sadler gave chase and caught him within two blocks.

The Texas Rangers designated left-hander Doug Davis for assignment, a day after he gave up four runs and four hits to the New York Yankees in his only start this season. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release or send him to the minor leagues if he clears waivers the next three days.
