Crews Fight Lightning-Sparked Fires
Lightning storms rolling through the state have sparked dozens of small fires in Stanislaus and Sequoia national forests, but a fire that started about 10 miles south of this Kern County recreation area grew to 419 acres, fire officials said Thursday.
None of the fires were threatening structures, but firefighters worked to quickly contain blazes with a greater potential for developing into large fires.
In Sequoia National Forest, about 420 firefighters fought 34 fires that started early Wednesday, including the 419-acre blaze, which was moving down a steep hill to the Kern River, said U.S. Forest Service spokesman Martin Esparza.
The fire was 25% contained, and Esparza said he expected full containment by late today.
In Stanislaus National Forest, about 225 firefighters and support personnel were working to contain more than 40 small fires sparked by lightning.
