Little League Regionals Start Today

Vineyard Little League of Rancho Cucamonga, which scored a 1-0 victory over Temecula Valley North to win the Southern California championship on Thursday, will play Northern California, represented by Lakeside Little League of Granite Bay, at 8 tonight on opening day of Little League’s Western Regionals at Al Houghton Stadium in San Bernardino.

Western and Northwestern regionals of the tournament for 11- and 12-year-olds will take place in San Bernardino through Aug. 12. Regional winners qualify for the Little League World Series, Aug. 15-24, in Williamsport, Pa.

Riverside’s Gayle Hunter, who won the young women’s heptathlon (ages 17-18) earlier in the week, finished second in the triple jump on Thursday and first in the long jump on Friday in the Junior Olympics at Miami.

The 17-year-old Riverside North High senior, who is competing for the West Valley Eagles of Canoga Park, leaped 19 feet 2 inches in the long jump to defeat runner-up Yvette Lewis of Norfolk, Va., who jumped 19 feet. Lewis had defeated Hunter in the triple jump, 42-3 1/4 to 40-1 1/2.

Quiana Adams of the Pasadena Running Roses finished sixth in the young women’s shotput with a mark of 42-2 1/4, and her Running Roses teammate, Nashay Trice, was ninth in the intermediate girls’ shotput (ages 15-16) with a mark of 37-5 1/4.

In only his second AJGA event, Tom Davis of Australia, shot a two-under-par 69 Friday to win the HP Boys’ Junior Championship at the Westin Innisbrook Golf Resort in Palm Harbor, Fla.

Davis, who trailed leader Trent Leon of Dallas by four strokes to begin the day, finished the 72-hole stroke-play event at two-over 287, edging George Gandranata of Bradenton, Fla. (72) by one stroke.

Kenny Kim of Cerritos shot 72 to finish tied for 14th at 298.
